Museum of Science and Industry
Thursday, May 9, 2019 7:00 – 10:30 pm
The 2019 Annual Meeting’s Social Event will take place at the Museum of Science & Industry, Chicago. One of the largest science museums in the world—it is home to more than 400,000 square feet of hands-on exhibits designed to spark scientific inquiry and creativity. Explore, dance and socialize with your fellow scientists while enjoying Taste of Chicago food stations and beer and wine.
Below is a sampling of permanent exhibits. To see the full list of exhibits visit MSI Chicago.
- Science Storms: Reconnect with your sense of wonder in Science Storms. This permanent exhibit collects forces of nature under one roof, letting you observe and experiment with seven natural phenomena: lightning, fire, tornados, avalanches, tsunamis, sunlight and atoms in motion. Sure, you’ll learn core concepts of chemistry and physics, but it’s understandable if you’re too busy controlling a 40-foot tornado, seeing 1.5 million volts strike or creating a tsunami to realize it.
- Transportation Gallery: Imagine having that dream garage full of historic vehicles that have flown, soared, chugged and sped into the record books. Until you build your own, there’s the Museum’s Transportation Gallery. The first train to hit 100 miles per hour. The gondola that held the first humans to reach the stratosphere. An exacting 1903 Wright Flyer replica that itself took flight a century later. A Boeing 727 that sailed Lake Michigan and crossed Lake Shore Drive to land inside MSI. These are just a few among this vibrant array of vehicles that still look just moments away from takeoff.
- Fast Forward… Inventing the Future: We all imagine the things awaiting us in the future. Innovators just try a bit harder to hurry them up. What will the cars be like 50 years from now? Weren’t jetpacks and meal pills supposed to be ready, already? Hard to say what’s more fascinating: picturing tomorrow or remembering how we used to envision today. No, McFly, hoverboards aren’t exactly here yet. While you wait, meet some people who may shape your future in ways no less amazing. Fast Forward features innovators working to answer their own questions that push the current boundaries of science and technology. What if you could repair your body at the cellular level? Could food could be grown right in the crowded cities where people live? How far can we extend the human life span? Explore the ideas of 12 people who are seeking tomorrow’s answers today.
- Yesterday’s Main Street: Stroll the cobblestone streets of turn-of-the-20th century Chicago and enjoy the timeless delights on Yesterday’s Main Street. It’s the next best option for time travel until your flux capacitor comes online. A detailed 1910 Chicago street scene is here for you to explore. Window shop your way down the sidewalk, catch one of those newfangled “moving pictures” and savor this nostalgic sojourn with a treat in the ice cream parlor.
